New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation Inc.
The New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation Inc. is the peak body - the umbrella organisation - for the hypnotherapy profession in this country. When the Federation was established in 1993 it had two main objectives:
-
To represent, promote, unite and enhance the profession of hypnotherapy at a national level within New Zealand.
-
To provide a forum for discussion between the various hypnotherapy organisations in New Zealand.
Roger Saxelby was responsible for bringing the organisations together to form the Federation. He envisioned the profession coming together, presenting a unified front, forming closer ties, etc. He set a meeting date and advertised in national newspapers, as well as making numerous phone calls, to ensure that all hypnotherapy associations knew about the meeting. The first meeting of all interested associations was held in 1993, and the New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation was formed. However, despite nominations for Roger to become the Federation's first president, he chose to let another to take that role, although he has been on the Federation committee for most years since.
Professional associations formed the initial membership of this new organisation, and then in 2003 the Federation opened its membership to include other organisations that had hypnotherapy as their main modality. This was done to become more inclusive and better represent the profession. Alpha Hypnosis Training was the first school to join once memebership was opened, and Roger became one of its representatives on the committee. Susan Wood is the other Alpha representative.
The Federation has a current membership of eight organisations which includes professional associations, training schools and the New Zealand Hypnotherapists Registration Board Inc. The NZHRB is the only independent hypnotherapy board in this country. Others that have registered memebers are either affiliated to associations or schools, so are not independent.
In 1994 the first National Conference was held in Auckland, and became an annual event. Initially a one day event, in 2004 the conference was extend to a full two day event which included On-going Training Workshops on the Sunday, quite often featuring international presenters. These workshops have proved to be very popular with delegates.
In 2005 the Hypnotherapy Award Dinner was launched. This was held on the Saturday evening after the conference. It provides the Federation and its member organisations with the opportunity to honour those who have given excellent service and/or dedication in some way to their organisation and/or the profession, or because of their own achievements within the field.
The Federation has only hypnotherapy organisations as members, not individual hypnotherapists.

* NZ incorporated associations/societies.
Please note: as an independent organisation the Federation does not endorse any particular association, training school or trainer.
At Alpha we work within the profession. We strongly recommend our students join the New Zealand Association of Professional Hypnotherapists Inc. (one of the NZ professional incorporated societies - see list above) as soon as possible, and then upgrade to Professional membership once they have reached the required number of client hours. This gives them an independent annual practicing certificate which bestows their Alpha qualification with even greater credibility.*
* Most of Alpha's students have passed the NZAPH exam on the "first go". This is because, at Alpha, our comprehensive hypnotherapy training more than covers what is required for the NZAPH exam.
Contact the NZHF to be on the mailing list for upcoming workshops & conferences.
